With Just Over 50 Days Until Opening, the Island Expo Spurs Yeosu into Action Through Five Civic Campaigns

Yeosu citizens’ determination to ensure a successful Expo remained unshaken despite the summer heat
Yeosu City (Mayor Seo Young-hak) has launched a large-scale campaign to rally citywide support for the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo ahead of its opening.
The city announced that on the 15th, it held the “Yeosu Renaissance Together: Five Key Civic Action Campaign – July Focus Action Day” in the area around Yi Sun-sin Square in Jungang-dong, with some 750 participants, including members of the Civic Action Headquarters, affiliated organizations, and local residents.
The event was organized to strengthen the foundation for the successful hosting of the Island Expo and to foster a citizen-led atmosphere of voluntary participation. A pre-event performance by the Udo Pungmul Team and a screening of the Expo’s official promotional video added to the excitement.
During the main event, five citizen representatives, each symbolizing one of the five action areas—kindness, order, cleanliness, service, and environment—read a resolution pledging their commitment to the successful hosting of the Expo. This was followed by the simultaneous unfurling of large campaign banners along five routes extending from the Jungang-dong rotary and a towel-cheering performance, reaffirming the city’s determination to ensure the Expo’s success.
In particular, the event was conducted under rigorous safety measures in response to temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The city placed bottled water throughout the venue, established an emergency response system in cooperation with the Yeosu Fire Station, and kept a public health center ambulance on standby at all times. As a result, the event concluded without a single safety incident.
Kang Yong-myoung, Chair of the Civic Action Headquarters Council, said, “Even in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, the citizens’ passion for the successful hosting of the Island Expo burned even hotter.” He added, “During the remaining period, let us fully demonstrate the strength of this civic movement on the ground with pride, knowing that we are the face of Yeosu and its ambassadors.”
Mayor Seo Young-hak of Yeosu City said, “I was deeply moved by the citizens who stayed with us until the very end and strengthened our shared resolve despite the hot weather.” He added, “The power of citizens coming together with one heart and one mind like this will be the greatest driving force behind the success of the Island Expo.”
Meanwhile, the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo will be held from September 5 to November 4 across Yeosu, including the Jinmo District in Dolsan and the city’s island areas. During the remaining period, the city plans to continue the Five Key Civic Action Campaigns centered on the action headquarters in its 27 eup, myeon, and dong districts, while accelerating preparations to welcome visitors.
