Yeosu City Steps Up COP33 Bid Efforts… “Korea’s Climate Leadership Realized in Yeosu”

Competitiveness of the South-Central Coastal Region Centered on Yeosu Highlighted Amid India's Withdrawal… International Week Demonstrates Capacity to Host Global Events
Yeosu City announced that it is accelerating its bid efforts for the 33rd UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP33), emphasizing the need for an active national-level response and a proactive review of the South-Central coastal region centered on Yeosu as a host candidate.
COP33 is a large-scale international conference under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), attended by 198 countries. Scheduled for November 2028, the host city will be determined through international consultations in accordance with the Asia-Pacific regional rotation.
In particular, discussions over the host city have entered a new phase following India’s recent withdrawal from the bidding process, creating favorable conditions for the Republic of Korea to pursue the bid.
Against this backdrop, Yeosu City believes it is time for a strategic decision at the national level. Building on its experience hosting the 2012 Yeosu World Expo, the city possesses proven capabilities in managing large-scale international events, along with essential infrastructure such as accommodations and transportation. As a hub for petrochemical and steel industries, Yeosu also offers the optimal environment to practically implement a transition to carbon neutrality.
Furthermore, Yeosu’s long-standing preparations strengthen its case. Since becoming the first in the nation to propose a COP bid in 2009, the city has continuously laid the groundwork, supported by years of accumulated experience and commitment.
Notably, through the 3rd UNFCCC Climate Week and the Green Transformation International Week held from April 20 to 25, the city is demonstrating its capacity to host international conferences and the competitiveness of its climate and energy industries to domestic and international audiences.
A city official stated, “Hosting COP33 is a crucial opportunity to showcase the Republic of Korea’s climate leadership to the world.” The official added, “We will work closely with the government and relevant institutions to ensure Yeosu City is selected as the host.” They concluded, “As citizens’ interest and participation are vital, we hope for strong public participation in this Climate Week event as well.”
