- Project Worth KRW 1.098 Trillion, Including KRW 100 Billion in National Funding, Set to Launch in Earnest
Yeosu City announced that it has been finally selected for the ‘Complex Marine Leisure Tourism City Competition Project’ hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. With this selection, Yeosu City will receive KRW 100 billion in national funding and KRW 30 billion in provincial funding necessary for project implementation.
The ‘Complex Marine Leisure Tourism City Competition Project’ is a national competition aimed at creating a region-based marine leisure and tourism environment by linking existing marine tourism infrastructure with private investment.
Seven local governments, including Siheung (Gyeonggi), Songdo (Incheon), Boryeong (Chungnam), Saha-gu (Busan), Gochang (Jeonbuk), and Yangyang (Gangwon), participated in this competition. Yeosu was selected as the final destination after a document review and on-site evaluation. The on-site evaluation was conducted on October 30 around Namsan Park.
The city submitted its proposal plan based on regional conditions, including marine tourism infrastructure accumulated through the 2012 Yeosu World Expo, a wide-area transportation network, and existing tourism hubs and project districts.
The project is planned to be promoted on a scale of KRW 1.098 trillion, including KRW 200 billion in fiscal projects and KRW 898 billion in private investments, by 2030.
The fiscal projects include five zones: ▲ Smart Marine Leisure Support Center linked to the post-Expo utilization ▲ Dolsan Udu-ri Ocean Food Street Terminal (Sashimi Town site) ▲ Gyeongdo Complex Cruise Transfer Center ▲ Gyeongdo-Musulmok Sea Area Floating Wellness Park ▲ and Musulmok Beach Aquamarine Park.
In addition, plans are running in parallel to establish the Gamak Bay area as a marine tourism hub by linking it with the Musulmok Tourism Complex and Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex, which are being promoted as private investment projects.
Yeosu City intends to enhance accessibility within the region by creating marine transportation infrastructure such as excursion ships, yachts, and water taxis, and by expanding the connection network between tourism hubs.
The city plans to embark on the basic plan establishment service with a total service fee of KRW 2 billion, including KRW 1 billion in national funding, early next year. It also plans to prepare a detailed implementation plan by forming a promotion task force involving relevant agencies and experts and going through a process of gathering local opinions.
A Yeosu City official stated, "Regarding this competition selection, there was cooperation with relevant agencies and the local community," adding, "We will promote the project without setbacks by reflecting the opinions of experts and the region."
