- A Stepping Stone for COP33 Bid, A Leap Forward as a Leading Global City in Climate Action
Yeosu City (Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung) announced that it has been selected as the final candidate in the bid to host the Republic of Korea’s ‘2026 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Climate Week.’
Climate Week serves as a forum for preliminary discussions ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) and is a significant international event where climate agendas from various countries and regions are incorporated into the official COP agenda. Approximately 5,000 participants from 198 Parties worldwide, international organizations, and NGOs are expected to attend, with high-level meetings, implementation forums, and thematic sessions scheduled to take place.
The selection process for local governments across the nation involved a document review and a presentation evaluation. Yeosu City was selected as the final candidate in recognition of its outstanding capabilities in the climate and environment sector, including its experience hosting international events as the site of the 2012 Yeosu World Expo and the ‘Yeosu Declaration,’ which centered on the protection of marine ecosystems.
In particular, its commitment as a leading city in climate action, having hosted the nation's first Climate Protection Week since 2008, and its excellent infrastructure positively influenced this selection.
Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung stated, "This selection as a final candidate is a strategic foothold for our bid to host COP33 in 2028 and an opportunity to showcase the climate leadership of both the Republic of Korea and Yeosu City to the international community, in conjunction with the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo." He added, "By hosting Climate Week, we will discuss a sustainable future with the world and enhance Yeosu's global standing."
Meanwhile, Yeosu City has been actively engaged in international cooperation. Last April, the city visited the ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) World Secretariat and the UNFCCC Secretariat to promote its bid for COP33 and the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, as well as to discuss the necessity of hosting Climate Week.
