Yeosu City to Make an Air Pollution-Blocking Forest at Deokyang Sunny Park

Making a healing spot at the old railroads of the Jeolla Line “to protect the health of the citizens and restore the hearts exhausted by COVID-19”
Yeosu City (Mayor Kwon Oh-bong) revealed on the 1st that the creation of the air pollution-blocking forest at the Deokyang Sunny Park at the old railroads on the Jeolla Line where the Deokyang Station used to be is now complete.
Deokyang Sunny Park is a park in the city using a closed railroad site that used to be vulnerable to air pollution because it is near the Industrial Complex, but with the creation of the air pollution-blocking forest, this place has been reborn into a new healing spot in the city that protects the health of the citizens.
The air pollution-blocking forest is a key project of the Green New Deal that induces carbon neutrality and has received 1,500,000,000 won from the government and 1,500,000,000 won from the city for a total of 3,000,000,000 won. It started construction last August and now has 3ha of forest and trail of 190m.
At the ceremony of completion on the 30th of last month, Yeosu City Mayor Kwon Oh-bong and around 100 people from the Yeosu City Council, related organizations, and local residents were present and together congratulated the creation of the resting place for citizens.
The forest has 12,834 trees recommended by the Korea Forest Service including Chinese Evergreen Oak, Zelkova Tree, and sasanqua camellia which all have good adhesion and absorption of air pollution, which increased the reduction effect of air pollution.
The city is planning on setting up convenience facilities like a sports facility that the citizens can enjoy with the forest.
The mayor of Yeosu Kwon Oh-bong said, “The creation of the air pollution-blocking forest at the site of the closed railroads will not only improve the atmospheric environment near the Industrial Complex but will also provide a comfortable resting place for the citizens who enjoy the railroad park. We will continually expand the forest for air pollution reduction near the Industrial Complex and downtown area for it to be a big help for the protection of citizens’ health, carbon neutrality, and in inviting the COP28 to the South Central Region on the South Coast of Korea.”
